OUTLINE 6ishiki art & sauna

In Kameoka, Kyoto—known as “the town of mist”—a serene basin encircled by rolling mountains, time seems to flow at a gentler rhythm. Within this quiet landscape stands 6ishiki (Muishiki) art & sauna, a one-of-a-kind art boutique retreat.

Housed in a meticulously renovated 100-year-old residence, the villa combines refined Japanese tradition with contemporary art. With only one booking per day, guests are offered an entirely private stay—immersing in architecture, sauna rituals, and curated artworks by the owner-artist.

Since its opening in 2022, 6ishiki has become more than a destination: it is an intimate encounter with art, wellness, and the timeless spirit of Kyoto.

6ishiki quietly stands in a residential neighborhood where new houses line the streets—yet it is itself a 100-year-old home, carefully renewed to hold both memory and art.

Kameoka is not a famous destination; it is a town of everyday Japan, where the scenery may seem familiar, almost unchanging. Look up, and there is the wide sky. In the distance, gentle mountains stretch along the horizon. The air carries the scent of green, fresh and alive.

Here, in the midst of an ordinary landscape, time slows. You begin to feel yourself more clearly—simply by being present.

Beauty and tranquility are not confined to special places. They are always here, waiting to be noticed, if only the body and senses are awake to them.

And then, in a quiet moment, you may realize: “I was already fulfilled.”

CONCEPT

At 6ishiki, every moment is designed to awaken the fullness already within you.
Here, the five senses—sight, sound, scent, taste, and touch—are brought into harmony with a sixth: awareness itself.

In this quiet retreat, you are invited to slow down and let these six dimensions of perception guide you.
The sound of silence, the fragrance of the earth, the subtle play of light and shadow, the textures beneath your fingertips, the lingering taste of tea—together they remind you that beauty and contentment are never far away.

It is a journey not of seeking more, but of realizing:
you were already complete.

A stay that invites you to reconnect with yourself
—within the quiet rhythms of everyday Japan.

At 6ishiki, every detail is designed to awaken a quiet dialogue with yourself.
Housed within a century-old townhouse, the atmosphere is imbued with depth and stillness—an aesthetic space where history and contemporary art converge.

Throughout the house, original works by artist Eikoh Tanaka invite you to encounter art not as a spectacle, but as part of daily life. In the private sauna, time slows; with no one else around, your body and mind are released into a state of unspoken serenity.

Here, luxury is not excess—it is the subtle beauty of ordinary moments, elevated into something timeless.

SAUNA – An intimate space to awaken body and mind –

At the heart of 6ishiki lies its signature feature: a private sauna crafted entirely from Japanese hinoki cypress.
Designed in the Finnish style, the sauna allows you to set your preferred temperature and enjoy self löyly by pouring aromatic water over the hot stones. Afterward, immerse yourself in a cold plunge filled with mineral-rich groundwater drawn from a natural well. Surrounded by the calming scent of hinoki, this exclusive space invites you to release both body and mind.

In a space that belongs only to you, gaze up at the open sky.Breathe deeply with your whole body, and surrender to the calm of the outdoor air.The rising scent of hinoki wood, the stillness of night and early morning—a sense of liberation beyond words, found only in this private sanctuary.

Dinner Plan / Sa-Kaiseki (Sauna Kaiseki)

After the sauna, we invite you to savor a special dinner course: Sa-Kaiseki (Sauna Kaiseki).
Kaiseki, a refined dining style born from the Japanese tea ceremony, shares a spiritual sensibility with karaburo—Japan’s traditional steam bath, introduced through Buddhism and later evolving into a uniquely Japanese form of purification and relaxation. At 6ishiki, we weave these two traditions together into a new experience.

Centered around a clear kombu dashi broth, the dishes are delicately prepared to gently restore the body from within. Using seasonal ingredients from the local Kameoka region, each course reflects the subtle beauty of Japan’s four seasons, inviting you to taste not only with your palate but with all five senses.

no-mu art and meals

no-mu, the café adjacent to 6ishiki, was created by artist Eikoh Tanaka, who personally renovated a 100-year-old kominka (traditional Japanese home).Blending the quiet charm of traditional wooden architecture with the refined sensibility of an artist, the space invites you to slow down and savor the present.
After refreshing yourself in the sauna, enjoy our original drinks in this unique setting—where art and everyday life gently meet.
